Having joined the company in 2016 from global investment bank Moelis & Company, Winkler was appointed Melco’s President in September 2019 as part of an executive overhaul and charged with overseeing the daily operations of the company’s properties, including Macau, Manila and the Mediterranean. That hasn’t been an easy task for the 45-year-old given the challenges presented by COVID-19, which have turned the company’s focus more towards shoring up liquidity than counting their cash. There was also the not so small setback of seeing their Yokohama IR dreams quashed when the Japanese city withdrew from the development race in September of this year. In the meantime, Melco is still working on two non-gaming resorts in Japan, while 2022 will see the launch of City of Dreams Mediterranean – Europe’s first true integrated resort – in Cyprus and ongoing development of Studio City Phase 2 in Macau. Winkler’s personal experience includes almost 20 years in finance at Wall Street investment banks, participating in projects that familiarized him with Melco and vice versa. He worked on mergers and acquisitions at UBS, then joined Moelis & Company, founded in 2007 to specialize in M&A – a skill he put to good use when Melco briefly acquired a stake in Australia’s Crown Resorts in early 2019. 過去に業績 が振るわなかった人に対して厳しい態度を示してきた企業と して、メルコリゾーツとカリスマ性があるローレンス・ホー会長兼CEOはエヴ ァン・ウィンクラー氏が何か正しいことを行っていると信じているに違いない。 投資銀行モエリス・アンド・カンパニー から2016年にメルコに入社し、その 後、2019年9月にメルコの代表取締役社長として、マカオ、マニラ、地中海を含 むメルコ所有施設で日常の監督業務を担っている。 新型コロナ感染拡大により企業はキャッシュよりも流動性に重きを置くよう になった。今回のパンデミックにより直面した課題は45歳の彼には容易に解 決できるものではなかった。また、今年9月に横浜市がIR誘致を撤回したこと によって、彼らの横浜IRの夢が崩れ落ちたのは小さな後退ではない。 この間に、同社は日本でノンゲーミングリゾート施設の開発を2カ所で進め ている。また、2022年にはキプロスでヨーロッパ初となる真の統合型リゾート であるシティ・オブ・ドリームス・メディテレニアンが立ち上げられ、マカオでは スタジオシティフェーズ2の開発が進んでいる。 メルコへの入社前、同氏はほぼ20年間をウォールストリートの投資銀行の 財務部で過ごし、メルコと関わる複数の企画に参加することでメルコに精通 する機会を得た。またその逆もしかりで、メルコがウィンクラー氏を知る機会 にもなった。同氏はUBSで合併や買収に携わり、その後、M＆A専門の会社とし て2007年に設立されたモエリス・アンド・カンパニーに入社。同氏はメルコが 2019年初めにオーストラリアのクラウン・リゾーツを一時的に買収したときに 重要な役割を果たした。 26-50 エヴァン・ウィンクラー
