But the virus hasn’t been too kind in return. Macau’s VIP junket segment has been arguably the hardest hit of all gaming sectors in 2020, with VIP baccarat revenue across the SAR falling 60.2% year-on-year in the first quarter according to government figures, then by 95.7% in Q2, as border closures and a Chinese government crackdown on gambling capital outflow crippled the industry. The challenge for Meg-Star now will be to reclaim its mantle among Macau’s “Big 4” junkets, having previously positioned itself as one of the winners from consolidation of the industry in recent years.
