After completing Borgata in Atlantic City, Boyd Gaming turned its attention to redeveloping Stardust, a Strip landmark opened in 1958 behind its twinkling neon sign that Boyd purchased in 1985. Once the redoubt of mobsters, Stardust was the basis for Nicholas Pileggi’s book Casino , depicting the biggest gaming revenue skimming operation ever uncovered, fictionalized in the Martin Scorsese film starring Robert De Niro. Boyd added to the original 50-acre Stardust site during the early 2000s, assembling a total of 88 contiguous acres (36 hectares).
